Morphum Environmental and Aquaculture Direct worked collaboratively to develop a sustainable management framework which updated the Environmental Codes of Practice for pacific oysters, greenshell mussels and king salmon.

The sustainable management framework is tailor-made to be relevant to New Zealand conditions and constraints to allow for sustainable growth within the industry. The management framework demonstrates the New Zealand aquaculture industry’s commitment to improving its sustainability performance, and is intended to improve confidence for regional and district councils when renewing consents, many of which are due in 2025.

Key deliverables:

  • Updated Environmental Codes of Practice to reflect current industry practice, regulatory framework and market issues, and to provide a useful stepping stone to individual company formal eco-certification. The result has been the production of sustainable management framework documents for greenshell mussels, pacific oysters and salmon.

  • An overview of management responsibilities and procedures, environmental objectives and targets, and indicators of performance for greenshell mussels, pacific oysters and salmon.

  • A sustainable management framework that is accessible, to achieve good industry buy-in.

  • A consistent benchmark for assessing environmental health and industry sustainability, and an improvement to international confidence for increased marketing and growth.
