Cat Davis leads a Dream Team session with St Thomas’s School
The Sir Peter Blake Trust Dream Team is a group of inspirational Kiwi leaders who every year aim to inspire thousands of Kiwi kids to follow their dreams. They visit schools to tell their stories, plant seeds of inspiration, and encourage young New Zealanders to have big dreams and back themselves to make them happen. The Dream Team happens during Leadership Week from 3–7 July 2017. Cat Davis tells us about her Dream Team session with students at St Thomas’s School in Kohimarama.
I went to St Thomas’s School in Kohimarama to speak to the school’s leadership group, a small group of Year 4 and 5 students, about my career pathway and what inspired me to become a marine scientist. A love of water, biology and the outdoors led me to study marine biology at the University of Auckland, but a passion to make a difference in the real world led me into the world of environmental consulting.
I took the leadership group on a journey through my intermediate, high school and university years, and then through my working life up to my current role as an environmental scientist at Morphum Environmental. As a group, we discussed several leaders – including both famous leaders and local leaders in their community. We talked about the qualities that form good leaders and how and why they have inspired the students. Students then filled out their Dream Action Plan to connect their dreams to actions. They listed ideas for support, advice, how to overcome barriers and what resources or training they might need to make their dream a reality.
Students were encouraged to enter their dreams online at www.dreambank.co.nz to be in to win some fantastic prizes! Entries close on Thursday 7th July, 2017.
