Inviting nature back into our communities

Our Process ▸
With strategically restored locations and a holistic, science informed understanding of indigenous habitats, we can invite birds, lizards, freshwater fish and other native fauna into spaces that our human communities can share and enjoy.

We centre collaboration with hapū, iwi and communities, honouring local knowledges and histories of place as well as aspirations for the future in this mahi.

Our expert science, environmental engineering and GIS teams complement our restoration planning projects investigation to develop practical and operationally focussed action plans that bring local aspirations to life.

Measuring and celebrating success

Establishing clear objectives, target outcomes, and monitoring methods for the restoration project is essential to ensure the success of the project. This is also essential for sharing success and learnings with the community and stakeholders, including project funders.

Enhancement and restoration objectives, targets and measures often stem from higher-level catchment management plans, as well as from smaller, site-specific kaupapa.  Key sources of information and inspiration include ecological desktop analysis, hapū and iwi environmental management plans, cultural health monitoring plans, Council operational management plans, community group projects and existing restoration plans for the wider area.

Our expert team brings these sources together into a comprehensive plan for the future restoration of our natural and community areas.

Site Assessment

With so many variables, understanding the intricate details specific to the site becomes core to the success of the project.

Our team visits the site to collect data on the soil, native habitat,  existing flora and fauna, watercourses and more.

We utilise this scientific assessment, combined with the community understanding and target outcomes to establish the foundation for the restoration plan.

Restoration Plans

When and where actions are going to take place to restore the natural space.

Planting plans, maps, project calendars and any engineering designs are delivered to operational staff to undertake the restoration mahi.

Our team outlines the methodology and recommended resourcing for restoration projects, including timelines and methods on enhancing habitat right through to specific procedures for those on-site, including pest control measures and plant protections.

Site Monitoring

Ongoing monitoring is how we assess the impacts of the restoration project against the target outcomes.

The progress and improvements of restored sites can vary over time, and the ongoing assessments helps to show communities and councils the successes achieved from the restoration.

Together, we can restore thriving ecosystems.
