A hydrology and flood risk assessment assesses or models how water moves across a catchment and specific site now, and how it will move once a new development is built, so you understand the flood and erosion risks. They include mapping flood-prone areas and simulating rainfall events in both pre-development and post-development scenarios, so you can understand how new builds have or will affect the flood hazards in an area.
You'll usually need one if your property sits in an overland flow path, flood prone area (such as a topographical depression), a historic or predicted flood plain, or if your council requires an assessment to meet consenting requirements such as Plan Change 120 in the Auckland Unitary Plan. Addressing these risks upfront gives your resource consent application the best chance of being accepted, rather than risking rejection or delays further into the process.
